Do you speak English?
Does this question sound familiar to you? Have you ever been asked this question?
We are sure that the answer is positive in both cases. We are also certain that there were times when you just ‘smiled your answer’ because you were too afraid that your English might not be good enough. So, we are here to help you dismiss these worries and even more!
Our course aims at developing your English language skills in 4 main directions:
1. Essay Writing
2. Speaking English
3. Academic Grammar and Vocabulary
4. Presentation Skills
You will be taught by dedicated and well-trained professionals who are fully committed to offering you the best educational experience possible. Meet our team here.
Most English courses will teach you English with explanations in your mother tongue. But we won’t do that! We’ll teach you ‘English with English’ and this method will double your exposure to the new language by creating an English-speaking environment at your college.
Your learning experience will take a new and exciting turn by concentrating on skills such as critical thinking and research rather than memorization.
The Applied College is proud to introduce to you our EIP. This three-semester course has been specifically designed to help you develop your English language skills for academic purposes. Whether you need to study English as a support to your academic studies or you just want to improve your general language skills, our course will enhance your proficiency level in English.
Course Description
The EIP at the Applied College is designed to help students develop their English proficiency from level A1 to level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
This three-semester program intends to aid students in acquiring the academic skills and language level necessary for succeeding in their university studies.
The EIP is divided into two modules as follows:
• ENG.011 (levels A1 to A2)
• ENG. 012 (levels A2 to B1)
During these classes, you will:
• Read, analyze, and discuss about various academic texts
• Learn how to get the gist of a text by employing specific reading strategies such as skimming and scanning.
• Use the information acquired through reading in writing well-structured essays;
• Improve your revising and editing skills;
• Expand your vocabulary;
• Improve your understanding of English grammar
- Master the listening skills necessary for understanding your lectures, seminars or any other informal communicative act.
- Interpret various instances of oral communication.
- Take part in academic discussions and presentations.
- Conduct oral presentations on various topics.
- Speak English more accurately and fluently.
All our classes are designed to be engaging and student-centered. So, your active participation is expected and highly valued. For optimum efficiency of our lectures, the following points must be observed during classes:
•You must use English while class is in session.
• It is okay to ask questions or have discussions with your instructors, especially if you do not understand the class material. You should not be afraid to ask for help.
• Time management is an important skill to learn.
• Critical thinking should be learned. You should not copy answers from the Internet, your textbook, or your classmate.
• Presenting ideas in class is expected—students will be called on or may volunteer to speak.
• Students are usually graded on class participation, assignments, homework and exams.
Academic Reading and Writing: 8 hours/week .
Academic Listening and Speaking: 4 hours/week.
Core classes meet Sunday through Thursday. However, individual schedules may vary according to the other courses that you are studying during a particular semester.
• You will learn English through a process called immersion, which means that you will practice English on a daily basis. Studies show that immersion is the best way to master a language because it reproduces the manner in which native speakers learn the language when they are infants.
• You will receive a significant amount of tasks and assignments throughout the semester. Exhausting as this may sound, it is a strategy that will help you acquire new skills faster and better. Practicing more often within a short period of time speeds up the process of acquiring a new language.
1.Reading:
Students will be trained to become effective readers by developing their critical thinking skills and their ability to extract the main ideas in a text without understanding each and every word.
2. Writing:
• The main strategy used in improving this skill is the process approach, which is based on outlining, proofreading, and editing. It is a very useful strategy for writing well-organized essays.
3. Listening:
• The students’ listening comprehension will be trained with the help of well-structured activities of pre-, during, and post-listening activities.
4. Speaking:
• The students will be trained to use the linguistic and lexical knowledge gained throughout the program in several academic contexts, such as presentations, seminars, oral exams, and group presentations.
• The EIP is a full-time course based on a student load of 12 hours per week. Students will be taught through a series of lectures and practical activities.
The course is usually delivered through face-to-face instruction. All classes meet Sunday to Thursday, from 8.00 AM to 1.00 PM. All class meetings occur on campus, during scheduled meeting times. The schedule will include two or three EIP classes every day. The skills to be practiced will alternate between Reading and Writing classes and Listening and Speaking lessons.
As of the autumn 2020 semester, most courses are taught online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The online EIP course is delivered synchronously (in real time) during scheduled meeting times. Students are expected to actively participate in the online classes and to observe the pre-established meeting times. We aim to offer you an interactive learning experience, so you’ll be working closely with your peers and instructors in the friendly and secure environment provided by the E-learning platform of the university.
